Union Square & Washington Square Park: Explore New York’s Famous Spots

Like our Post? Share Now!

If you’re visiting New York City for the first time, you might be thinking of places like Times Square or the Statue of Liberty. But if you want to experience the real, local, and creative side of New York, there are two amazing places you must see: Union Square and Washington Square Park.

These two parks are right in the middle of the action in downtown Manhattan, and they are full of life, fun, and culture. Let’s take you on a walk through each one!

Union Square: Where the City Comes Alive

Think of Union Square as the city’s stage. It’s where skaters, artists, musicians, and market vendors all come together in one electric space. Whether you’re into food, fashion, or just want to feel the NYC buzz, this is where it’s at.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Street Performances Galore: Breakdancers, freestyle rappers, violinists playing pop songs—you name it. This place is like a 24/7 talent show. The best part? It’s all free, and you’ll be standing just a few feet away!
  • The Greenmarket: This isn’t your average food stall scene. The Union Square Greenmarket is a massive open-air market that pops up several times a week. You’ll spot fresh fruit, cookies the size of your face, handmade soaps, fresh-cut flowers, and even maple syrup from local farms. Bonus: you’ll get to practice your English while buying a snack!
  • Chill Out Zones: Need a break from all the action? Grab a drink from a local café (there are tons around) and sit on the steps in the square. From here, you’ll get a full view of the hustle, hear music in the background, and probably spot a few skateboarders doing tricks nearby.
  • Cool Bookstores and Shops: Bookworms, get ready! Union Square is home to one of the biggest bookstores in NYC—Barnes & Noble. Inside, you’ll find comfy seats, air conditioning (a summer hero), and lots of fun reads—even manga and graphic novels. There’s also everything from fashion stores to tech shops nearby.
  • Famous Statues: Look around and you’ll find statues of big names like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, etc. They’re part of what makes Union Square’s vibe a cool mix of old and new.

Did you know? Back in the 1800s, Union Square was where big parades and protests happened. Today, it’s still a spot where people gather to express themselves—through art, music, or peaceful rallies.

Union Square isn’t just a park—it’s a whole world squeezed into a few blocks. Whether you come to shop, chill, eat, or just watch the scene, you’ll leave with a story to tell. And guess what? During your summer school with ES Camps, you will explore Union Square with friends and guides who will help you make the most of every moment.

Washington Square Park: The Creative Soul of the City

After Union Square, you’ll head downtown to Washington Square Park, just a short walk away—but the vibe? Totally different. It’s still lively and fun, but more artsy, more relaxed, and more “let’s-hang-out-on-the-grass-and-listen-to-music” energy.

What You’ll Experience:

  • The Iconic Arch: You know that big white arch that looks like something out of Paris? That’s the Washington Arch, built to honour the first U.S. president, George Washington. It’s one of NYC’s most photo-worthy spots, especially when you see the Empire State Building lined up perfectly behind it.

  • The Fountain Scene: Right in the centre of the park is a massive fountain where everyone hangs out. Some people sit around it, others dip their feet in on hot days, and sometimes there are kids playing, friends laughing, or couples dancing to live music nearby. You’ll want to grab a seat and soak it all in.
  • Live Music (Always): From classical musicians to singer-songwriters and saxophone players, the park’s sound is always changing. You might even hear a full jazz band or see a dance group putting on a spontaneous show.
  • Meet the Artists: Local artists often line the pathways, selling hand-drawn portraits, colourful paintings, or handmade jewellery. If you’re lucky, you might even see someone doing sidewalk chalk art that looks like 3D!
  • The Chess Plaza: Feeling competitive? The southwest corner of the park is filled with small tables where chess champions (seriously—they’re FAST) play all day. You can try a game or just sit and watch the moves. It’s intense, but super fun.
  • Laid-Back Lawn Life: The wide green lawns are perfect for just chilling. You’ll see NYU students reading, groups doing yoga, or friends having mini picnics. It’s the best place to just relax and feel the NYC vibe at a slower pace.

Fun Fact: This park has some spooky history! It was once a cemetery and a site for public hangings. Now, it’s full of life, joy, and creativity—proof that even spooky places can glow up.
