Robben Island, located just off the coast of Cape Town, is a small, seemingly peaceful island with a history as profound as it is painful. It gained worldwide recognition as a symbol of apartheid ( a former social system in which black people and people from other racial groups were forced to live separately and did not have the same political and economic rights as white people) and resistance. The island’s name, “Robben,” is derived from the Dutch word for “seal,” as it was once home to a large population of these aquatic creatures.
However, Robben Island is more famous for its role as a political prison. It served as a place of imprisonment for political leaders who opposed the unjust official policies, including Nelson Mandela, who later became South Africa’s first black president. In total, the island housed thousands of political prisoners over the years.
To reach Robben Island, you’ll board a ferry at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. As you set sail, you will be treated to the stunning views of Table Mountain and the city’s skyline. The 30-minute ferry ride is a scenic start to the history lesson awaiting you.

A heartfelt moment of the tour is when you visit Nelson Mandela’s former cell. It’s a tiny, dimly lit space with a thin mat on the floor, a bucket for a toilet, and a few personal belongings on display.
Nelson Mandela, a symbol of freedom and equality, is deeply connected with the history of Robben Island. As a prominent anti-apartheid activist, Mandela was arrested in 1962 and sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the struggle against racial discrimination in South Africa. For 27 long years, he was kept in a small cell on Robben Island, suffering from severe conditions and hard labour. Despite the hardships, Mandela’s spirit remained unbroken. His time on the island transformed him into an international symbol of resistance and tolerance. Ultimately, his release in 1990 marked the end of apartheid, and he later became South Africa’s first democratically elected black president.
