What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of London? Big Ben? The Tower Bridge? How about a giant Ferris wheel with jaw-dropping views of the entire city? That’s right—we’re talking about the London Eye!

Whether you’re joining us at ES Camps for one of our summer school programs or exploring London with your family, the London Eye is an adventure you don’t want to miss. Let’s dive into why this iconic attraction deserves a top spot on your bucket list!

What Is the London Eye?

The London Eye isn’t your ordinary Ferris wheel—it’s a modern masterpiece. Located on the South Bank of the River Thames, this observation wheel offers the most spectacular views of London. Standing tall at 135 meters (443 feet), visitors can see the city from the clouds.

It opened to the public in March 2000 and quickly became one of London’s most iconic attractions.

What Can You See from the London Eye?

One of the best things about the London Eye is its 360-degree views. From every angle, there’s something exciting to spot. Here are just a few of the highlights you can enjoy:

  • Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament: These historic buildings are a feast for the eyes, especially when the sun reflects off their golden spires.
  • Buckingham Palace: You might not spot the Queen, but the grand palace looks stunning from above.
  • The Shard: London’s tallest skyscraper stands out beautifully against the skyline.
  • St. Paul’s Cathedral: Its magnificent dome is a showstopper from the sky.
  • The River Thames: Watch as boats and ferries glide along this famous waterway, snaking its way through the city.
  • Tower Bridge: One of London’s most famous landmarks, with its majestic towers and suspension cables, is a must-see from above.

On a clear day, you can see as far as 40 kilometres (25 miles) in every direction. That’s right—you can even catch a glimpse of Windsor Castle if you’re lucky!

What Makes the London Eye Special?

There are many observation wheels worldwide, but the London Eye has a charm like no other. Here’s why it’s a one-of-a-kind experience:

1. Smooth Sailing

The London Eye rotates at a super-slow speed—just 0.26 meters per second. This means you’ll have plenty of time to soak in the views and take amazing photos. A full rotation takes about 30 minutes, making it a relaxing experience.

2. A Capsule Built for Comfort

Unlike cramped Ferris wheel cars, the London Eye’s capsules are spacious and luxurious. Each capsule is made of glass, so you get an uninterrupted view of the city. They’re also air-conditioned, so you’ll feel comfortable no matter the season.

3. Day or Night? It’s Always Stunning!

The London Eye is stunning when the city sparkles in the sunlight during the day. But it’s just as magical at night, with London’s famous landmarks glowing in the dark.

How the London Eye Was Built

The London Eye wasn’t just a casual project—it was an engineering masterpiece. Built to celebrate the millennium, it was designed by husband-and-wife architects David Marks and Julia Barfield.

  • The construction was a global effort:
  • Steel components were made in the UK.
  • Capsules were crafted in France.
  • The cables came from Italy.

It took a team of engineers from five countries to bring it to life. The Eye was assembled flat on floating platforms on the River Thames and then carefully raised into its upright position. Fun fact: It was the tallest observation wheel in the world when it first opened! Today, that title belongs to the Ain Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, which stands at an impressive 250 meters (820 feet) tall.
