When you think of Los Angeles, images of glamorous Hollywood, bustling streets, and iconic landmarks might flood your mind. But let’s not forget the stunning coastline that stretches for miles, offering some of the best beach experiences in the world. If you are an explorer on an adventure camp with ES Camps, the stunning LA beaches cannot be missed. So, grab your sunscreen and shades as we dive into the coastal charms of Los Angeles and discover the top beaches that you must visit!
If you want to experience the perfect Southern California beach vibe at a summer school, Santa Monica Beach is your go-to spot. With its expansive sandy shores, iconic pier (a structure built into the water from the shore and held up by piles that lets boats and ships dock), and lively atmosphere, this beach is popular among both locals and tourists.
Start your adventure at the Santa Monica Pier, where you can ride the historic Ferris wheel, enjoy arcade games, and try some delicious funnel cake (a spiral-shaped cake made by pouring batter through a funnel into hot oil and coated with powdered sugar). You can also enjoy beautiful views of the coastline on the pier, especially during sunset. Whether you’re into volleyball, biking along the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, or simply lounging on the sand, there’s no shortage of things to do. The beach’s wide expanse makes it perfect for groups to spread out and have fun.
Fun Fact: Did you know that the Santa Monica Pier is over 100 years old? It opened in 1909 and has been a beloved landmark ever since. It also marks the end of the historic Route 66, adding a touch of Americana to your beach visit.
Venice Beach is not just a beach; it’s an experience known for its bohemian spirit and vibrant boardwalk. Stroll along the famous Venice Beach Boardwalk and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of street performers, artists, and vendors. From breakdancers to fortune tellers, you never know what you’ll encounter. Fitness enthusiasts will love Muscle Beach, an iconic outdoor gym where bodybuilders and fitness buffs showcase their strength. Watch skateboarders perform jaw-dropping tricks at the Venice Skate Park, a popular spot for skaters of all ages.
Fun Fact: Venice Beach was founded in 1905 by tobacco millionaire Abbot Kinney, who envisioned it as a “Venice of America” with canals and gondolas (long, thin boats with a flat bottom and high points on both ends that are moved forward and backwards by someone with a pole at the back). While most of the canals were later filled in, some remain and can be explored by foot or paddleboard.
Zuma Beach in Malibu is a favourite among those looking for a less crowded beach experience. Its long stretches of clean, sandy shore and excellent facilities make it perfect for a day out with loved ones. Zuma Beach is known for its clear waters and relatively mild waves, which are great for swimming and surfing. Lifeguards are on duty, adding an extra layer of safety for families. Keep an eye out for dolphins and seals, which are often spotted off the coast. Birdwatchers will also enjoy the variety of seabirds in the area.
Fun Fact: Zuma Beach has been featured in numerous films and TV shows, thanks to its pristine appearance and beautiful backdrop.
While technically located in San Diego, Mission Beach is worth mentioning for its unique beach fun and entertainment blend. If you’re up for a youth camp in Los Angeles, this beach offers a lively boardwalk and plenty of activities. Walk, bike, or skate along the boardwalk. It’s lined with shops, cafes, and bars, offering multiple places to stop and enjoy the view.
Fun Fact: Mission Beach is home to one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the United States, the Giant Dipper, which has been thrilling visitors since 1925.
Los Angeles’s beaches are more than just places to soak up the sun; they’re vibrant, dynamic spaces that offer a wide range of experiences. Whether you’re exploring the eclectic boardwalk of Venice Beach, surfing the legendary waves of Malibu, or enjoying a bonfire at Dockweiler State Beach, there’s something magical about each of these coastal gems. So, carve out some time to explore these top beaches next time you’re in LA. Your perfect beach day awaits!
